Where to Buy DJ Music: Beatport, Traxsource and Bandcamp Compared

Buying a track is like buying a book: you keep the file. Here is how the three main stores differ.

What each store is

• Beatport: a major electronic music store with an official genre list (Beatport Genres). Purchased tracks are in My Library, Collection tab (official help). Purchased MP3s can be upgraded to WAV or AIFF for a fee (store purchases only).
• Traxsource: describes itself as "Real House and Electronic Music" and offers AIFF, WAV and MP3 downloads through a cart (Traxsource). Payment methods and refund terms were not checked.
• Bandcamp: artists and labels sell directly. Download formats: MP3 V0, MP3 320, FLAC, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, ALAC, WAV and AIFF (official help).

Pros and cons

• Beatport Pros: detailed genres, easy to find new releases. Cons: genres outside electronic music can be hard to find.
• Traxsource Pros: focused on house. Cons: some releases are album-only.
• Bandcamp Pros: choose your format, money goes straight to the artist. Cons: genre browsing for DJs is less structured than Beatport or Traxsource (my impression).

Basic buying flow

1. Create an account or log in.
2. Add tracks to the cart.
3. Choose a format (see below).
4. Buy and download.
5. Make a second backup somewhere other than your computer.
6. Add to DJ software (using purchased tracks and streaming in software).

Re-downloading later

• Beatport: My Library, Collection tab. Beatport Streaming subscribers can re-download purchased tracks without limit (official terms).
• Bandcamp: the page right after purchase, the email link, the Collection page or the Purchases page. No time limit is stated (where to download, re-downloading). Downloading directly to iPhone or iPad has caveats in the official help.

Choosing a format

• Serato DJ Pro supports MP3, OGG, ALAC, FLAC, AIF, WAV, M4A, AAC and more. DRM-protected files do not work (Serato).
• rekordbox 7 can load MP3, AAC (.m4a/.mp4), WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless (.m4a) and FLAC. Copy-protected files may not load or play (rekordbox official). For DJ hardware, check each unit's manual.

Cautions

• Software that records and converts streams may break service terms. Get music by purchase or official means.
• Prices, formats and plans change. Check each site before buying.
